Botox & Dermal Filler
Botulinum Toxin or “Botox®” is a medication that is used to relax overworked muscles. These overstimulated muscles can cause esthetic issues like wrinkles, or physiological issues like TMD, head, neck and facial pain, and migraines. One of the beauties of using this medication, is that the esthetic and therapeutic effects cannot be separated. This means that if a patient is seeking Botox® to treat wrinkles, they will notice a decrease in muscle pain in that area, and a patient who seeks to treat muscle pain will notice their skin is more relaxed and smoother. The uses of Botox® are vast and fascinating! The treatments our office focus on the most include treating forehead, eye and mouth wrinkles, tension headaches, facial pain, and can even help reduce clenching and grinding of the teeth. This is especially important in dentistry because grinding and clenching can destroy the teeth and any dental work a patient has had. Most people who clench and grind also experience some type of facial pain. Did you know that 85% of facial, head and neck pain is caused by the muscles? Botox® also has a cumulative effect meaning that if you keep treating the muscles of concern, over time they will need treated less often. Most treatments are every 3 months with the possibility of increasing that time span with regular treatment.

Fillers are used to replace the collagen that our bodies naturally lose over time. The body loses about 1% of dermal collagen per year, and this number usually increases over the age of 50. Fillers are curative and preventative. The fillers our office use are temporary fillers and are composed of a naturally occurring substance in the body called hyaluronic acid. These fillers typically last around 6-12 months.
